Makia Mai was created from the belief that what we wear should carry intention.

Designed and made on Maui by Kehau Akau — a mother, maker, and multidisciplinary creative — Makia Mai is a slow fashion line rooted in movement, story, and place. Each piece is thoughtfully crafted, honoring both what has come before and what is still becoming.

The name Makia Mai speaks to focus and purpose — a reminder to create with presence and move through life with intention.

A Practice of Making

From pattern drafting to sewing and finishing details, each garment is shaped by hand and guided by lived experience — island rhythms, family life, and the ever-changing environments of Hawaiʻi.

Makia Mai draws inspiration from contrast and transition: land to sea, work to rest, softness to strength. Designed to be worn multiple ways, the pieces are meant to move with you through everyday life.

Production is intentionally small-batch, prioritizing quality, longevity, and mindful use of materials. Some pieces incorporate reimagined textiles, while others are created from carefully sourced fabrics chosen for comfort and durability.
